Czerny -- Selected Piano Studies, Volume 1 composed by Carl Czerny (1791-1857). Edited by Heinrich Germer and Willard A. Palmer. For Piano. Masterworks; Piano Collection. Alfred Masterwork Edition. Classical; Masterwork; Romantic. SMP Level 9 (Advanced). Book. 104 pages. Published by Alfred Music (AP.597).

ISBN 0739015974. Classical; Masterwork; Romantic.

As there are several hundred piano studies by Czerny, it might become confusing to attempt to pick out the most effective exercises. To overcome this problem, Heinrich Germer, the original editor, chose those he thought were best. Willard A. Palmer has made several changes to metronome markings, fingerings and pedal indications where he felt certain passages needed clarification.

This title has selections that range in difficulty from SMP Level 3-9.

  • September 13, 2012 Very useful collection

This is likely my most used book over a long teaching career. It is a great help to the development of finger dexterity and has two advantages that make it superior to most Czerny. First, its level begins at a low intermediate and gradually advances. Second, the selections are short...

--as short as four measures, thus avoiding the endless extended examples many of us learned as students. The selections can be practiced slowly and returned to and polished at a higher level of speed and musicality. I find that a student who has learned the first twenty-five to thirty examples now has a solid technical foundation. I have never used the longer exercises in the second part of the book, but usually have two or three of the first fifty assigned each week.

  • August 09, 2011 Easy to Read

Study exercises (like Czerny for example) are like eating your veggies: they aren't always fun, but they're still good for you. Previously I had played mostly Hanon exercises which focus on even fingering and agility. Czerny, I think, is a little more versatile. This book is clear and...

easy to read, which is imporant to know when buying what I like to call "study" music.

  • July 22, 2011 Covers the fundamentals

I was using my teacher's copy. Czerny is more fun than others in that he tries to make the exercises musical. Covers most of the required techniques.
