  • April 11, 2013 Czerny Op.599

5 Stars & 2 Thumbs UP!!! This is the great 'old standard', a MUST HAVE a use each day for any piano student, but my good teacher always recomends that a new student of piano start out with FIRST completing Ferdinand Beyer's Op.101 with Czerny's Op.823 - Czerny...

's 823 is much better written then 599, shorter, easier, and along with the F. Beyer will help make it much easier to tackle the tough stuff in the latter part of Czerny's Op.599! The beginning student really should start out with the more 'assecible/easier' F. Beyer Op.101 and/or Czerny's Op.823....But, this one book of Czerny's Op.599 once it's 'masterd', then one can easily go on to so many varied great Master works of any of the Greatest composer's! Bravo to Czerny's Op.599 forever!!! Work it hard, and you'll see results with patience. Remember to practice this one 'hands separate', as you'll have more enjoyment in practice that way!Elementary to Intermediate/Advanced.

  • August 01, 2011 Nice transitional material.

This collection is a nice work for transitional material between method books and study of repertoire. I would not limit study to just this book, but it is definitely a beneficial supplement. Technical training is also very good with this collection.

  • May 25, 2011 Not This Edition

I like to use Czerny's Practical Method (aka First Tutor) with most of my students, assigning one etude per month starting in the second year of lessons. I do not recommend this edition, however, due to the awkward fingering. Czerny required the student to change fingers on every repeated...

note, even with whole and half notes. The result is some very unwieldy fingerings that make the etudes far more difficult than they need to be. I use the Peters edition, which has sensible fingerings that make sense to the student. In Czerny's Little Pianist, these forced fingerings do not occur, so even Czerny abandoned this approach in his later work. The 100 exercises range frrom level 2 to level 6, so do not plan to cover this book in a short period of time.

  • October 14, 2006 Teaches ledger lines early on!

After playing through a few excercises of this book, one will be faced with reading notes written very high/low (ex 3,4 and others). Those who are just starting out on piano may want to get some experience via some primary / lvl 1 material before starting this book. Difficulty...

ramps rather quickly in this book and I must say that the exercises are the most "musical" sounding of all, especially ex 19 and after. Later in the book, velocity and dexterity are emphasized. It's a great book to have in one's study of the piano. When you finish this book, you should be ready for Czerny's op299 and op740.
