  • June 17, 2008 ...about that 3rd sonata....

Sorry, but that 3rd sonata does nothing for me. Not only extremely difficult to learn and play, but it seems it always comes off as brutish, no matter who performs it. I have Horowitz's early recording, and even he can't make it sound "pretty." Despite many "nice moments...

" (e.g.: motivic diminution and fade-out end of Mvt. I, lyrical melody of Mvt II, clever insinuation of folksong "Malinka Ma-ya" in Mvt. III), the overall effect is ham-fisted and overstrained. It's just difficult music, all round. My background is PhD in theory and 20 years of piano lessons.

  • December 16, 2005 ABSOLUTE MUST FOR ANY PIANIST

Kabelvsky is a master of piano composition, and his 3rd sonata, is the icing on the cake. It's just plainly beautiful music, while remaining supremely difficult to play! However, it's worth all the trouble. This is a collection of sonatas any pianist has to own!
