Isidore Philipp takes the viewpoint of all noted thinkers on the subject of piano playing: there can be no satisfying interpretation of the great works until the performer is so fully a master of technique that his mind can freely assert itself in tone production and in the musical rendering of the phrase, the sentence, and the entire piece. The exercises found in this book will ensure that the student acquires command over instantaneous muscular contraction and relaxation, and a consequent ease and endurance which enable him in a comparatively short time to play long and brilliant passages effectively, without stiffness or fatigue.

    Difficulty Level:
  • September 04, 2006 Beneficial for conscientious pianists

This book is not for beginners but for pianists of intermediate level or higher. My teacher, a child prodigy, was forced to work on this book for hours each day, and it certainly paid off because she can play anything! This book, in my opinion, is a step beyond Hanon...

, and a step down from Liszt's impossibly difficult technical exercises. As technical studies, they're certainly uninteresting from a musical point of view, but not as boring as Hanon. This book also contains very useful instructions from the composer on how to work on these exercises properly. Highly recommended for any serious pianist.
