This is such a great collection encompassing the early to mature versions of the Transcendental Etudes at a very low price. You can see what Liszt kept and what he threw away as the timeline progresses. Every serious pianist should have this.

Liszt is my favorite composer, although his music is so frequently show-offy and virtuosic that a lot of pianists see his music as garbage, virtuosity without musicality. Still I think Liszt's music has more audience appeal than perhaps any other Romantic. Of course you can't even dream...

of playing these pieces without very highly developed technique. Remember that Liszt spent 5 hours a day on technique alone. Also, make sure you can reach at least a 9th or a 10th with one hand or you may have some trouble. Feux Follets is by far the hardest study of double notes ever written, and 10 (Appassionata) is incredibly difficult. 3 is the easiest and 4 is also a flashy outburst of Liszt's overflowing ego that we all know about. You can't expect to learn any of these quickly.

These etudes are the paramount of piano virtuosity and I got them because I wanted to complete my collection of etudes from various authors. It will take me many, many years before I master them. I have many Peters and Henle editions, but only Dover seems to offer you complete...

sets of works like this one, not individual sheets! However, I would like Dover to stop printing on paperback and give start using more durable materials for their sheet music. I am satisfied with what I have, but there's always room for improvement.

Clear, dark printing. Work the book a little to get it to stay open. Well worth the money.

This book is very good. I always trust dover, they are my favorite publisher. This book contains the first version of the etudes... rather easy boring excersizes, I didn't play them. Then It has the second version, the really hard version of the etudes. Verry few people could play...

them so liszt simplified them (if you call it simplified...) I didn't play them... to hard. But I did play teh Trancendental etudes, the final version, edited to perfection. My favorite is number 12. Chaise Niegie. (or however you spell it). I also love 2 and 10. I hope you buy this book and enjoy it like I have. It is all I could have asked for.
