  • March 31, 2009 Familiar tunes but very elementary arrangements

    This set has a great tune list, but, like a can of baked beans, needs lots of doctoring to make it acceptable for public consumption. There are only very elementary intros and endings. It is essentially the head with three part harmony. You need to map out who plays what...

    when to give it some variety. Expect to mark up the parts extensively to change the mix for the second time through, on the bridge, behind solos, etc. None of that is done for you. Less experienced players who are used to reading down a chart as-is may be uncomfortable or confused with a penciled-in roadmap. If you are used to working from fake books, this is similar, but harmonized. Our female singer didn't find many tunes in a singable key. I assume the keys were selected to keep the horn range modest. These charts are similar to the old "Combo-Orks", but not as well harmonized. We will keep experimenting, but they are pretty plain.
