The second installment of Christmas Through the Centuries offers a number of surprises, taking us far from the mainstream Christmas carol repertoire. One such surprise is what must be the oldest surviving Nativity hymn of the Christian church, 'Veni redemptor gentium' by the 4th-century Ambrose of Milan. Another is 'Verbum caro factum est,' as set by Ludwig Senffl, presented here in the fine, well-balanced version by Singer Pur. Lovers of the traditional Christmas carol will find plenty to please them, too.
