    Hartland, WI
    Difficulty Level:
  • November 17, 2009 The arrangements are awesome, but not "easy"

As other reviewers have stated, "easy" piano implies three things: (1) that the melody is carried in one hand, with harmonic accompaniment in the other, (2) that the pianist needs to be unafraid to move his or her hands to seemingly unfamiliar keys, to achieve a rewarding effect, (3) that...

these arrangements are worth studying because Dan Coates is such a sensitive writer. Enjoy! Concentrated work has its joyous compensations.

    Difficulty Level:
  • December 16, 2008 Lesson learned: easy piano is NOT EASY

First, I want to say that I have long admired Dan Coates's arrangements. The piquant and lively harmonies, coupled with faithfulness to the original melody, are enviably accessible and winning to the hand and ear. Second, I offer words to the wise: be prepared to work for a while...

at recreating this wonderful set of tunes. Explanation: typically, "Easy Piano" means that the melody lies in one hand (or occasionally in the other), while the "non-melody hand" plays a mix of single notes, chords, and arpeggios. As my piano students will readily tell you, "Easy Piano" can be quite sophisticated and challenging. Yet I have heard no one express regret for having tried out the pieces in this book. The main response is, "I'll be good enough next year to play this!" In conclusion, this is a superb collection for the hard-working and/or intermediate pianist of any age. Enjoy!

    Red Bluff, CA
    Difficulty Level:
  • October 17, 2007 Very full sounding

The title of the book is a bit misleading. There are teen kids who are just starting piano and would not be able to play out of this book. I would equate the book's level to that of a student in level 4 of Alfred's books, or an...

adult in level 2 of the adult books. The songs are very nice and full sounding.... no lulls. It is my favorite Christmas book so far.

    Difficulty Level:
  • November 02, 2006 A must have!

What a fantastic book! The arragements are not overly difficult; but they are full-sounding and a pleasure to play. Advanced pianists may consider this beginner; but I think the pieces have more substance that takes them a notch above the beginner level. If you want nice, straight, fun arrangements...

of both newer & older Christmas songs without having a Blues, Jazz, New Age, etc. flair added to them--then this is the book! I love it!
