    Difficulty Level:
  • December 09, 2013 Interesting but overwrought

These arrangements are a little disappointing, but fairly interesting alternatives to more straightforward versions. They all have a cheesy modulation in the middle, and slightly strange intros. But not terrible. Definitely need advanced sightreaders if you want to use this at a gig without rehearsals.

    Difficulty Level:
  • November 04, 2011 Disappointed

I bought this book before any reviews were published and my string quartet began to read through them and predict what was coming next. If you feel like cutting out a bunch of sections and doing your own revising, these can work, but we just tossed aside the book and...

have never used any of these for gigs. Terrible transitions, distasteful articulations for strings. Definitely written by a band person.

    Difficulty Level:
  • December 26, 2009 wonderful arrangements

I was puzzled by negative reviews of these arrangements. These are terrific, i in fact own 2 copies. For gigs i have cut some of the intros and a couple of transition areas , but these are by far our favorites we getting together for play/parties at Christmas. They require...

a little more experienced player, for example if someone hasn't done Holly and Ivy ( a beautiful arrangement) we will read thru a couple of times before we would do in public. When people borrow my books as well this is the one they want. Jingle bells is particularly great and quite funny :)

    Difficulty Level:
  • December 17, 2009 Heaps of fun

For the gigging quartet, this is such a breath of fresh air. Innovative, imaginative and humorous, these arrangements do a lot to keep gigs interesting and fun, which is such a relief after playing so many run-of-the-mill arrangements. If you're not up for a bit of...

polytonality here and there, then these arrangements will surprise you, but my quartet found them extremely enjoyable. Would definitely like to see some more stuff from Ocker.

    Difficulty Level:
  • October 16, 2009 Fantastic arrangements

I bought these fantastic arrangements for the string quartet at my church several years ago. Every year they look forward to playing them, and the rest of us look forward to hearing them. They are very imaginative, musical, complex, and fun - as I said - Fantastic! They are not suitable for...

beginners. But for advanced musicians, it's nice to have something so engaging. I highly recommend them! BTW, The Sunrise Quartet has a recording of them that is perfection.
