Except for the vocal part, the musical score remains open. Chamber Music should not be viewed as a completed score but as a general indication towards performance. The score is essentially an elaborate bass line with some harmonic indications (as in a modern basso continuo) and some lines of counterpoint to set the general tone of the piece. The performers are invited to create their version of this piece with added parts and improvisation.Number II and V include an added part at the bottom of each line which should be viewed as a modern basso continuo. In numbers VI, VII, IX and X only the bass line is indicated.It is the same for the architecture of the piece. Performers may add introductions, codas and linking material to construct their version of this piece.Instrumentation: the accompaniment can be played by any plucked polyphonic instrument or by an ensemble of instruments. James Joyce planned to sing these songs with lute accompaniment so it would seem natural to choose instruments from the plucked string family (lute, theorbo, guitar, harpsichord…). However, other instruments may be used if necessary.
