This book teaches the most crucial function of a chord instrument in the Celtic seisun (session)- that of playing tasteful, interesting, imaginative, and supportive improvised accompaniment. Celtic Back-Up presents accurate and directly applicable information on the theory, conception, stylistic considerations, procedures, and resources for accompaniment. Every facet of seisun accompaniment is thoroughly explored. With this book you will come to understand why many of our Celtic authors are reluctant to suggest chord accompaniment with their melodies in the first place; the idea is to be open to fresh ideas and improvise the accompaniment as you go.

This is an excellent text to not only learn about playing celtic music, but also better understanding and listening to this music. The explanations and examples on the CD are superb. As a beginning irish bouzouki player I have only been able to get through the early portions of the...

material, but have found it to be most informative. I think anyone interested in playing celtic music, from a beginner to an accomplished musician, would gain knowledge form this book.

An excellent tutor in the methods of accompanying Irish/Celtic music. It gives a very thorough explaination of modes and modal scales and how to build chords from this. Some very good examples on the CD.
