Dougherty's folksong arrangements are imaginative and highly expressive of the meaning and emotions of their respective texts....All of the musical expression of Dougherty's insights into the texts is revealed in the piano parts.... His harmonies explore the emotional undertones of the texts, and each stanza of a...

song receives different pianistic and musical treatment without ever losing the thread of the original melody. There are many countermelodies and motifs taken from the tunes that inhabit the inner voices of the musical texture like a subtext of thoughts running beneath audible speech. His final phrases and postludes are especially effective in sustaining the mood of the character or of the setting. These arrangements have the substance of art song and the directness and story telling function of folksong, and all of them are worthy of concert performance at the highest level as well as wonderful vehicles for study and performance by developing singers.
