Canzonetta, written in 1978, was intended to be the slow movement of an oboe concerto commissioned by the New York Philharmonic. No other movements were composed and the concerto was left unfinished at the time of Barber's death in 1981. The oboe and string orchestra version of Canzonetta was first performed in December, 1981, by Harold Gomberg, oboe, and the New York Philharmonic conducted by Zubin Mehta. Duration: c. 8 minutes.

    but the above reviewer is sadly mistaken. The Canzonetta is a seperate work, originally composed for oboa nd strings, and was to be the sow movement of an oboa concerto written for Barbirolli's wife. However, Barber died before the concerto's completion, and tis is the only extant movement...

    . It si a nice work, but not one of Barber's best. Try the above mentioned piao concerto slow movement arranged for flute and piao or violin and piano.

    oboe was Barber's favorite wind instrument and he wrote simply gorgeous solos for it in his Symphonies, Violin Concerto and Essays for Orchestra I, II, and III.
