Giovanni Gabrielis Canzoni e Senate (1615) is undoubtedly the most original and important collection in the whole repertoire of Venetian instrumental music. Issued posthumously (Gabrieli died in 1613), it is a highly varied collection, presumably covering about fifteen years of his production, and so ranging in style from comparatively conservative works like the present one to highly experimental and dramatic pieces for large forces in up to twenty-two parts.
