Duets for Mandolin and Guitar

By Butch Baldassari and John Mock

Customer Rating:   2 Reviews Write a Review

Cantabile (Duets for Mandolin and Guitar). Composed by Butch Baldassari and John Mock. For Guitar & Mandolin. Saddle-stitched, Chamber Music. Classic. Intermediate. Book. 96 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.95734).

ISBN 9780786617890. Classic. 8.75 x 11.75 inches.

This companion book to the CD Cantabile by Butch Baldassari and John Mock fills a void in the all too often hard to find category of music for mandolin and classical guitar, expanding the repertoire for the intimate combination of these two instruments. Pieces range from Renaissance and Baroque to the more Classical music of Handel and Beethoven, to contemporary and Romantic compositions from Satie, Calace and Tarrega. This book should work well for both students and professionals. Standard notation only.

    Salt Lake City
    Difficulty Level:
  • December 05, 2007 Beautiful melodies for mandolin

If you're an early intermediate player, you could probably work these tunes out and be able to play them. If you're advanced, you could just about sit down and read them. These tunes are fun to play--great for gigs if you're a working musician. There are...

a couple of things I think could maybe be improved, but it's really just a matter of personal preference: I would like more tempo markings and a little more prominent role for the guitar. There is nice contrapuntal interaction and harmonized lines, but the guitar very rarely shares the melody, much less take the lead while the mandolin accompanies. I'd still recommend it as very good repertoire for a mando/gtr duo. Keep a look out for the arrangements I'll be publishing soon! :D

This a very good collection of pieces. Ecellent arrangements, and can be used for performance as well as playing alone. Be sure and get the CD.
