  • May 22, 2009 probably the best edition

Vocal selections of Lerner & Loewe's "Camelot" have been widely available, this is the latest (definitive?) edition, part of Alfred's Classic Musical Editions. In terms of quantity of songs selected, it's the most complete (?) ever ("Fie on Goodness", a cut song mentioned in the informative foreword, is missing...

though). The songs have been rearranged in a way that comes as a cross between the standard vocal editions and the vocal score. On some occasions, the alternate keys are not the best: "Follow Me" sounds less powerful in Bmaj (and unnecessarily more difficult to play) than in the previous Ab Maj arrangement. Average players might prefer the standard 7-song edition, and I personnally won't get rid of it, as the arrangements are globally better, but I'll recommend the new one to every pianist who wants to dig deeper into this score. I salute Alfred's Series and strongly encourage them to release more. Extra thanks for the binding: the pages lie flat while playing!
