Brahms' Concerto No. 1 in D minor (2 CD Set)

By Johannes Brahms

Composed by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). Instrumental Solo Part and 2 CDs. Published by Music Minus One (MO.MMOCD3009).

Item Number: MO.MMOCD3009

ISBN 1596150076. Soloist: David Syme, piano; Ensemble: Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra; Conductor: Emil Kahn.

This mammoth work is a magnificent concerto cast in the composer's trademark Olympian manner - broad melodic lines, a mixture of German classicism and romanticism as only Brahms could do it. Universally admired as one of the all-time great Romantic concerti.

Includes a high-quality printed solo part (with orchestral reduction) and two compact discs containing a complete version with soloist, in split-channel stereo (soloist on the right channel); then a second version in full stereo of the orchestral accompaniment, minus the soloist.

I've been wanting to learn this concerto for a while, and I saw this CD accompaniment, so it seemed like a good idea. The sheet music is fine - easy to read, etc - but the CDs are not good at all. It sounds to me like the orchestra played one...

track, and the pianist is added on top for the other track - either that or the orchestra has no regard whatsoever for the pianists tempi and movement.
