Great accompaniment playing, accurately phrased melody part - not too free (as in the Vol.7 Essential Jazz Standards), not too stiff (as in The Benny Golson volume) - superbly balanced selection of tunes. This one will suit both the intermediate student set out to practice as well as please the advanced...

player seeking, on any lonenly afternoon, to bring back in his ears the unique, wonderful, quintet (4 plus himself) jazz ensemble sound. In some parts of the world, just trying to find four musicians who will love, study and play this music, devoting to it the time needed, only for their souls' sake, with no other compensation, money or glory, in sight, is impossible. And, after 30 years or so, missions impossible can make many afternoons feel lonely, very lonely, indeed.
