  • June 03, 2013 A fun book to learn and play!

Returning to the sax after years of layoff and playing mostly in church and for fun. This book has been great to get back into my horn. Had everyone in church nodding, toe tapping and smiling as I played along with the CD. Great set-up to hear Boots play...

, practice with and without Boots playing and then playing with only the backing band.

  • December 15, 2012 Great man & sax player , poor CD

We all know Boots was one of the best with a sax. But I also knew him as a snow-skier, active christian, and family man. I enjoyed ski days with him and parts of his family. Of course Boots' playing on the demo is wonderful. I learned a lot...

by trying to play with him & then without him. What I feel lets this publication down is the backup group. Very poor, not even funeral home quality organ playing, plus singers who were just going through the motions. What a shame this legend didn't have the backup he deserved! It's a great book to learn from. It's a poor CD to listen to.

I've really enjoyed playing from this book and appreciate that it includes both the alto and tenor sax parts, since I play both. Some of the songs are intermediate level while others incorporate more of the Randolph "style" and are more advanced. Still, they can be adapted (dropping the...

altissimo an octave, for example) and moderating the embellishments, while still fitting in with the background. I've played "In the Garden", "The Lord's Prayer", and "The Old Rugged Cross" in church services so far and have had great responses. Wish there were more books like this for alto!

cord switches, but with lots of practice can be learned.

    Difficulty Level:
  • January 14, 2009 In truely "Boots" style

I really like this book/CD. These gospel arrangements are for the most part very good. I love the arrangement of "In the Garden." The 3 medleys are a little trite but useable. I've already performed the up-tempo arrangement of "Amazing Grace" in public. It is a jazzy...

arrangement that you may not be able to play in a more liturgical church setting. Overall a very enjoyable and spiritual book/CD.
