I was looking for piano pieces that I could self-teach, that would challenge me as an accomplished pianist, and yet not take months to master. These are perfect. There are definitely some that are more difficult than others, but they are beautifully written and perfect to play for family...

, friends, in performance, or just for your own enjoyment.

  • March 29, 2007 From rags to Russians

Elena Kats-Chernin is an Australian of Russian descent. She is enjoying strong patronage from the ABC here at present, and rightly so. I heard the Russian rag on the radio a couple of times and could not resist learning it. Although I have sporadic perfect pitch, I had not...

given any thought to the key until I saw the score. I was shocked to see so many flats and sharps, however, with persistence I am overcoming the hurdles. I am not a music teacher but I'd guess most of the rags here come in round about grade 6 to 8 of the UK/Aus system. The Russian Rag is charming and rich in attractive harmony and the modulations masterful. At first I was annoyed to have to buy a whole book of rags to get the one but I forgive the publishers now because the book is full of gems. The transliteration of the rag form to a Russian style (even sometimes reminiscent of Rachmaninov) was a stroke of genius all too rare nowadays in my opinion.
