Best in the West - Nashville Guitar (The History, the Players and the Technique of Country Guitar). Composed by Richard Kochli. For Guitar (Fingerpicking). Flex bound, Solos. AMA Verlag. Western American. Beginning-Intermediate. Book/CD Set. 276 pages. Published by AMA Verlag (MB.610228E).

ISBN 9783899220155. Western American. 8.75 x 11.75 inches.

A comprehensive analysis of American country music from a European perspective, this massive 275-page book comes with a companion CD with 97 tracks. Everything from basic rhythm accompaniment to blazing bluegrass solos is addressed including: Carter lead style, fingerpicking, rockabilly riffs, Nashville lead styles, Western swing and honky-tonk, country blues and rock, Cajun history and styles, and a forecast of the future of country. The book is carefully structured with progressively arranged exercises, theory lessons and original and traditional tunes.

This book should prove to be an important resource for country music enthusiasts. All 387 musical examples appear in both standard notation and tablature. Complete lyrics are provided when applicable. Kochli's love and mastery of the entire spectrum of country music is evident throughout.

This is actually a pretty good book. Chapters are divided into 3 levels - beginners thru intermediate so it's possible to work through each level separately. The CD covers mostly traditional and author-written "emulated style" music and examples of licks in the book. Also included is a intro to...

early country musicians and suggested listening. The writer gets corny sometimes but it's OK. The material is present in chronological order from Jimmie Rodgers upto Vince Gill, Brent Mason and covers a variety of styles. Focus is more on earlier artist though. Reference guides (scales, etc.) are also a big plus here. This will keep you busy for a long while.
