Composed by Jane Bastien, James Bastien. Supplementary Books. Bastien Piano Library. Music book. Published by Neil A. Kjos Music Company (KJ.GP23).

Item Number: KJ.GP23
ISBN 910842027.

Beginning Piano For Adults is designed for students at the college level (music major or non-music). Material is divided into four sections: Pre-Reading; Reading; Functional Piano; and Piano Literature, Technique and Style. Carefully selected exercises ensure gradual, thorough reading progress in all keys. Pre-Reading and Reading sections emphasize good reading habits and rhythmic orientation through technic. Fundamentals of theory and musical structure are also introduced. The material found in the Functional Piano section provides useful training for music education students, who must be able to harmonize given melodies with appropriate accompaniment. The Piano Literature, Technique and Style section contains sufficient material for four semesters' work, covering everything from keyboard orientation to piano literature by master composers.

As a an adult who took piano lessons only in childhood, I found this book to be very rewarding. Successive units (chapters) cover progressively more advanced pianistic technique, while introducing the fundamentals of music theory to the point where the reader is equipped to handle simple chord modulations (unit 15...

). Carefully chosen examples, from folk songs and from the classical literature, illustrate most units. Information is conveyed succinctly and systematically, without fuss and without annoying visual distractions or recourse to popular songs. A valuable book.

  • May 03, 2011 Not for "dummies"

I was hoping for a book that I could sef-teach myself piano, like "Piano for Dummies." This book is not it! This might be ok for adults who are working with an instructor, but not so good for those of us trying to work on our own. It is...

    not user-friendly.
