Beautiful Music For Two String Instruments, Volume I

Beautiful Music For Two String Instruments, Volume I (2 Violins). Edited by Thom Proctor. For 2 string instruments. Duet or Duo; String Orchestra Method/Supplement. String method/supplement (Violin). Classical. Difficulty: easy-medium to medium. Collection. Chord names. 36 pages. Published by Alfred Music (AP.EL01323).

ISBN 0769231292. With chord names. Classical. 9x12 inches.

The study of string instruments should include ensemble playing at the earliest possible stage. There is much to be gained from the playing of duets. Each player learns how to listen to the other, and in a short time develops an awareness of balance, musical phrasing, intonation, and tone quality. This type of training is excellent preparation for participation in large groups. These four volumes of duets for two violins will help fill the need for early ensemble experience in the public schools. They should be used in string classes as a supplement to any of the standard string methods. They will also encourage music-making outside of the school, with parents or with other students. These duets are ideal for recitals in the public schools and in public school festivals. they may be played by two performers, or by multiple performers on each part, with or without piano accompaniment.

  • October 09, 2012 Very nice arrangements

We use this book in our ad hoc ensemble, a group of string players ranging from beginning to intermediate, led by an advanced violinist. The arrangements are very nice, provide nice melodic pieces for beginners, and flow well for more advanced players. Very gratifying to play, motivating to do more...

. Often we run over our allotted time, wanting to play 'just another one or two'... The pieces are short, though, so we repeat them a couple times to get the feel of the music

  • April 22, 2007 Good Introduction to Ensemble Playing

Beginners need to experience ensemble playing, and the problems peculiar to it, as early as possible, and Applebaum makes it happen. These early-grade (at least 3 fingers down fairly securely) duets are calculated to challenge the beginner and build technique and confidence without overwhelming them; introducing them to harmony...

and ensemble at a level they can master. Like all Applebaum, the music is a bit dated (hence 4 stars rather than 5), but I know of no better work at this level. Many of the glossier, newer books show less knowledge of technique and what constitutes a playing problem to a beginner, which can lead to feelings of frustration and inadequacy by the student. Duet playing should be a happy time, and I think Applebaum fills the need very well.
