Composed by Bela Bartok. Arranged by John Gibson. 20th Century. 41 pages. JB Linear #11469. Published by JB Linear (A0.581507).

Béla Bartók wrote his Two Portraits in 1908 and this is the second portrait named Egy Torz (One Grotesque).  The sheet music comes with score and parts and was arranged by John Gibson. You can watch a You Tube video of the score at https://youtu.be/lPFrZkzN1dU   Clarinet Choir (Eb soprano, Bb clarinet 1-3, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, Bb Contra with an alternate Eb Contra part and an alternate 4th Bb clarinet for alto)  This piece was reviewed in the December, 2014 issue of The Clarinet (International Clarinet Association) by Gregory Barrett. .....John Gibson's arrangement of the second of Bartok's Two Portraits for violin and orchestra, Op. 5 is scored for E-flat clarinet, three B-flat clarinets, with the option of a fourth in lieu of alto clarinet, bass clarinet and B-flat contrabass clarinet (or an optional E-flat contra alto clarinet). All of the instruments are kept within a modest idiomatic range so the fast speed of the music will be the greatest challenge. Part of the exciting push and pull of the music is due to hemiola groupings of notes and cross-rhythms of three against four. A successful performance will be breathtaking.
