Barry Galbraith was one of the best jazz guitarists of the 1950's. He was also a fine music reader who would write out his own arrangements of standards for his students. Both his playing and his writing are very straightforward. This book takes thirteen of Barry's rough, hand-written arrangements and adds chord symbols, left-hand fingering, and tablature. The companion CD was recorded by John Purse. Also included in the book are quotes about Barry from many other famous musicians, a 7-page article on Barry by his son Don, an obituary by George Russell, and numerous pictures of Barry at different times in his life.

At first glance i was rather disappointed on balance between amount of text (memorials, interviews) vs sheet music (13 standards - heads only). To be honest i'm generally interested and after music history and musician's bios, but i found this first impression to be negative. But then i took...

guitar, and from the very first note all of it was gone. I was really amazed. The arrangements are brilliant. Mr. Galbraith is master of making less notes sounding more. Arrangements are progressive - starting from relatively easy ones, up to intermediate/advanced stuff. They are musically excellent, and You can incorporate them in repertoire right away. So to sum up - this book is worth it's price - and I'm very glad i bought it. I'm looking forward to buy sequel to this.

I have both of these books and find them to be just challenging enough to be interesting. I've always played classical guitar, and this book helped me get start jazz. With a little thought you can simplify the music by avoiding some of the tougher jazz chords and still...

have fun and play some really nice pieces. This isn't a book for beginners.
