Piano - Intermediate
Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Edited by Keith Snell. Neil A. Kjos Master Composer Library. Sheet music. Published by Neil A. Kjos Music Company (KJ.GP382).

Item Number: KJ.GP382
ISBN 849761972.

The Bach Two-Part Inventions were composed as teaching pieces and appear in ascending order by pitch, starting with C and using only those Major and minor keys with no more than four sharps or flats. All Inventions, clearly engraved on two pages with no page turns, include editorial markings and suggested tempi. The well designed table of ornaments, presented on a large easy-to-read staff, shows a picture of the ornament, an accurate description of execution, and exactly which notes to play.

Everybody knows that every pianist has to play at least some of these. You should play them at the beginning and the end of your career.

Just as hard as they were when I started with them 80 years ago, but a nice clear copy and a good standard edition

  • April 30, 2011 Another of Bach's perennial favorites

These miniature masterpieces are valuable as exercises for both hands, introductions to counterpoint, and recitals.

  • March 16, 2009 Very Good Edition

If you're like me, you want trustworthy editions even though you may not be sure which ones are best for a given composer. I remember my college days when my teacher would tell me to get the Kalmus this, or the Tovey that. The Peters this, not the Dover...

that. Anyway I don't remember the Inventions edition I had in college (it was so long ago), but this one seems to have everything I need. Including a table of ornaments. It has the first Invention's first ornament the way I remember seeing it; I've seen other versions that have it printed differently. And that just confuses my eye. Anyway, I like this edition a lot and use it with my students.
