A beautiful song with gorgeous harmonies! It is suitable for a small ensemble or full choir. This setting is well arranged and a fine addition to any choral program.

  • July 25, 2009 Great Song -- Great everything

This was a wonderful closing song to our chorus concert this year and it really lived up to the original. The harmonies are straightforward and still amazing when you put them all together. The song has opprotunities for a tenor soloist (range up to the A above middle C) and...

for two recurring alto solos or duets over the tenor solo. The accompaniment CD worked out perfectly as it had a great percussion part. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

  • July 12, 2008 A song to sing forever!

I was not in any sort of chorus before I went to a band camp where we had camp choir. The director pulled out this song for us to sing, and we thought he was crazy when he said it was in Swahili. But then he played it for us...

and I almost cried. "Baba yetu" is a beautiful song in every way. It is the most amazing song I'll ever hear and I felt honored to get to sing it. Everyone who hears it LOVES it, and I have had it stuck in my head ever since. It is not a song anyone will forget easily, and creates a performance to remember forever! I sang a solo part too, and as a suggestion, since the song is so concentrated with challenging solos in a differnet language, we broke the tenor solo into eight parts to help ease the difficulty in remembering all of the lyrics. Especially if you are under a time crunch like we were.

  • March 09, 2008 Baba Yetu - Our Father in Swahili

My son first played the song Baba Yetu for me from his computer game Civilisation IV - he thought I might like it because I sing in an a capella choir, Raised Voices, which has a large repertoire of African songs, along with a focus on international music generally. Did I...

like it? No, I LOVED it: it is the Lord's Prayer in Swahili and I'm guessing 'Baba Yetu' translates as 'Our Father'. I was so excited by this music, I introduced it to the choir immediately and they were very keen to learn it for an African concert we're holding at the end of March. Alas, the choir won't be ready in time after all, but we're now definitely aiming to sing it at the Sea Change Festival being held locally (ie Jervis Bay NSW) in May. I would strongly recommend this music for any choir, whether with an African emphasis or not, a capella or accompanied, church groups or singers just looking to widen their repertoire and do something powerful and different.
