At Dawn They Slept

Concert Band - Grade 4
Composed by Jay Bocook. MusicWorks Grade 4. Score and parts. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.4002027).

Item Number: HL.4002027

Premiered at Pearl Harbor, this new work from Jay Bocook is a musical remembrance of that fateful day that launched our country into WWII. Opening with a beautiful and flowing melody featuring the woodwinds, the day begins with a lone bugler but with ominous undertones foretelling the chaos to follow. The attack is depicted using inventive scoring textures, dissonances and percussion. In the final segment, the opening melody returns juxtaposed over a strong rhythmic pulse in a hopeful look to the future. A powerful musical statement from one of today's most gifted composers!

My school used this piece in our marching show, and as a marching piece it is divided into two individual pieces; the first sounds of the opening of the day and the attack, while the second sounds of hope and rebuilding, looking for the future. Today we looked at the...

actual concert piece, and it's the two marching pieces rolled into one; it speaks of chaos and then goes to tell of the American spirit to never surrender or give up.
