  • March 25, 2007 An excellent and unusual collection

This is a valuable and most unusual compilation. Other multi-composer song books lean either to the operatic repertoire or to the German Lieder tradition. Here is a collection of songs by both American and English composers sampling the flowering of the art song in English through the first part...

of the twentieth century. The songs are chosen as singer-friendly and none is excessively difficult, though some skill is assumed, especially of the pianist in some of the more elaborate settings. I have so far enjoyed the English songs more than the American (perhaps because I am British?). Some of the latter, such as Ned Rorem’s re-working of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair, seem a little bizarre to me. The collection should certainly appeal to anyone in search of unusual repertoire.
