  • January 19, 2008 An Extraordinary Musical Collection

Every piece in Liszt's "Annees de Pelerinage" is a true musical delight, even though many of them are sadly overlooked. This fabulous book contains the entire collection of them in one terrific volume, in a beautifully laid-out format. Everything from "Vallee d'Obermann" to "Apres une Lecture du...

Dante" (aka the "Dante Sonata") can be found here, including the wonderful "Venezia e Napoli" (as well as its original version!) and the three Sonettos del Petrarca. This is a must-have for Liszt lovers, or for advanced pianists in general. The pieces are all very challenging, and some require immense virtuosic skill, so I definitely don't recommend it for beginning or intermediate players. Despite this, it's an incredible source of beautiful music that allows you to follow Liszt's musical maturation and changing style over time, as these works were written over the entire course of his life and were inspired by his travels. A more satisfying musical experience is difficult to imagine.
