I was so pleased to get my copy of Andante and Rondo Capriccioso. It was one of my sister's exam pieces - she was an excellent pianist and got her degree at the age of 13 years - this is going back to something like the 1930s. I can play it...

but not to the same standard as my sister, who sadly is no longer with us. I think it has a haunting melody and is a dramatic piece in many ways. I was very pleased with the way the music was despatched to me. Many Thanks

  • May 16, 2008 Beautiful piece, "interesting" edition

Mendelssohn definitely weaves a beautiful composition that is both technically and musically demanding. It is surely for the more advanced student. The edition on the other hand, leaves me with a raised eyebrow. I am not too sure about these pedal markings. One must remember that Mendelssohn's piano and...

the pianos of today are quite different. So the student and teacher must now go and make their own decisions. Mr. Hinson has given us Mendelssohn's pedal markings (bottom of pg4). On the other hand, Mr. Hinson's fingering is lovely. Using the 4th finger for the chromatic run in bar 175-6 is a bad idea for larger hands. The fingering in bars 189-92 are better and should be used with any chromatic run. It is a good score to use as a historical or theoretical reference, but as a pianist I am not convinced. Buy different editions and compare.

  • May 04, 2007 Exceptional edition of a dazzling piece

Mendelssohn's Andante and Rondo Capriccioso is a sparkling jewel of a work that would make a fantastic addition to any pianist's repertoire. And Maurice Hinson lightens the task of learning and interpreting this brilliant piece through his insightful, thorough performance notes and score markings. Enjoy this well-researched...

    edition of Mendelssohn's well-composed showpiece.
