    Northeast Indiana
    Difficulty Level:
  • May 20, 2011 English, not American

Many of the carols included in this medley will be unfamiliar to American listeners. Therefore, while a well-crafted, inventive setting, this is not good background music for American groups. Also, the difficulty inherent in medleys (frequent time changes, transitions from song to song) makes this a hard piece to...

play without a conductor. Not a piece a casual quartet can work up quickly.

    Moorestown, NJ
    Difficulty Level:
  • October 11, 2007 A Medley that's not Hokey

It's more than Christmas Music that you play in a particular season...it's a Piece of Music that is genuinely worth playing. The arrangements are well done, and well suited for string quartet, from colors achieved to how idiomatic the parts are. The parts are well balanced (not...

constantly 1st violin dominated) and each instrument is featured. The cellist won't be bored, and the violins won't be stressed. Above all, it's not hokey, despite its' being a Christmas medley. The familiar melodies are treated with a rare dignity. Tunes are allowed to finish before they start transitioning to the next one. The result is a series of fresh arrangements of traditional songs that sound like a smooth series of songs, rather than the jarring, abrupt mash of more of the same that is so typical with contemporary Christmas music.
