Ancient Airs, Cantigas, & Dances for Flute & Guitar

Ancient Airs, Cantigas, & Dances for Flute & Guitar composed by Jessica Walsh. For Flute & Guitar. Saddle stitch. Renaissance/Flute & Guitar Instruction. Intermediate/Advanced. Book & CD. 110 pages. Duration 70 minutes. Published by ADG Productions (AD.ADG054-CD).

ISBN 1882146441. Renaissance/Flute & Guitar Instruction. .

Many of the melodies in this book are more than nine hundred years old; yet these pieces are as vibrant, as exciting, and as seductive as they were centuries ago. This music is fun to play. It's addictive. You will find yourself humming it, and you'll come back to play these pieces again and again. Each piece in this collection has its own powerful personality. Many of the Cantigas have an indefinable feel we have not heard in music from other periods... It's like a texture that fills the room, it permeates the air and once inhaled, it paints pictures in your mind.

This is my third flute/guitar book in this series. The songs have a different character than those in Celtic Music for the Flute I and II, but most are captivating in their own right. A few are not very melodic, at least to my ear. But most are like...

the songs in the Celtic books. They make you want to play, play and play. A lot make ample use of the low register, which gives them a lot of character. The book is really in three parts: one with guitar notation, one with guitar tablature and a pull-out section for flute only. There are 27 songs, few than the number in some of the other books. Too bad the accompanying CD isn't recorded on 2 tracks so musicians can have the option of providing the other part of the music by themselves.

  • April 17, 2009 Good buy!

This book is full of melodies that make your heart want to sing. I really loved the recordings on the CD, and I loved this book so much that I ordered two more by Allan & Jessica. A must have, really.

I am a mandolinist, and play in a guitar and mandolin dou. We use many pieces from this book in performances. The flute parts lay very nice for playing on the mandolin. The guitar parts are well written as well, and provide nice hamonies, nice harmonies, not just a back...

-up. the CD is great for rehearsing, and just for listening. We've had many favorable comments when playing some of the pieces.

I am a classical mandolist and play with a guitarist and we play most all selections in this book for perfomrnaces. We also have the other books in this series, as well as Alan's other books for mandolin.

  • November 08, 2007 Excelent book,

I have loved this book. My reasons: 1. I got hooked with the melodies. You can close your eyes and there, in a minute, you are in the Europe of 1280, in the kingdom of Alfonso X. 2. The cd is a great guide for the playing. I believe a...

could never hear myself playing the first page without it. 3. Alexander and Walsh did a wonderful job.
