I've been using "An Introduction to Sight Singing" with my voice students for several years now because it's the most approachable and economical sight-singing book I have found for the private voice studio. It begins simply with do and re, adding one syllable at a time to...

complete the octave. Thirds through octaves are introduced in good time. The common keys of C, G, F and D majors are covered. The beginning is non-threatening for students with no background in music reading. There is even an introduction that explains note values and other basics of music reading. This introductory book could be pedagogically better if it saved the half step from E to F until after introducing the whole steps between F, G, A and B, but students who can sing a scale have no difficulty learning the notes in order. Also, keep in mind that it is an introduction. Thus, only half of the major keys are covered. Minor tonalities, accidentals, and more advanced concepts are not touched.
