    Difficulty Level:
  • July 01, 2013 Delightful and Accessible!

This is a tasteful selection of some smaller works by Alkan. They are all quite accessible; students ranging from intermediate to post-grad can enjoy these works, as well as amateurs/hobbyists and professionals alike. They show the tip of the iceberg of Alkan's vivid imagination, as well as...

the wide variety of inspiration in his music. Ranging from his Jewish roots, to the sound of bells, to a gentle and nostalgic Barcarolle, to a mad woman on a seashore, to "the voice of the instrument," this book is a must-have if you are searching for new gems in the piano repertoire to play or assign to students of almost all levels.

Alkan's reputaion for near-impossible difficulties comes from much of his big works- try the "Grande Sonate" or definitely his "12 Etudes Mineurs" to see some of his more outrageous music.

Here are some miniatures that I had minimal difficulty in learning. Very original, feels "different" under the hand. A great composer with original ideas, somehow much more modern than dates suggest. These defy his reputation for excessive difficulty.
