This was a gift for a special nephew that wanted to learn to play a keyboard. He has found it very helpful as he is teaching himself without a teacher's help. Would recommend it to any budding keyboarder.

  • December 16, 2008 A useful guide to keyboard styles

I must disagree with the previous reviewer concerning the quality of the performances and the accompanying CD. In my view, they achieve what they set out to do, namely to illustrate how particular styles are phrased and timed. They do not pretend to be concert performances and should not be...

judged as such. I have been very pleased with this book and with the CD. As an older person who is fairly new to piano/keyboard I have found the material to be very clearly set out. Although my ability to read notation is reasonable, having the CD as a reference tool is most helpful. The styles covered would be useful for players to learn, regardless of the main genre they focus upon. The package succeeds in getting one to the "so that's how they do it" point without bogging the the student down with extraneous information. An excellent buy.

I guess being a pro means performing bad elevator or cartoon tv theme music. I was very disappointed in the quality of the accompanying cd -- bad midi sequences to my ear. The author seems like someone who knows the theory and the notes, but can't play with any spirit...
