Alfred's Basic Prep Course, Lesson Book A is specifically designed for beginners who are five years old and up. Through the use of appealing music and attractive illustrations, it is no wonder that Lesson Book A is the most widely used young beginner's piano book now available. This course takes into consideration the normal attention span, as well as the small-sized hands of the young beginner. Shortly after beginning, the young student will be able to play "Merrily We Roll Along." The complete Prep Course consists of six books (Levels A through F).

  • January 03, 2013 Wonderful for young children

While this Level A series could be considered "too babyish" for older kids, for the 4-6 year old set it is wonderful. The progression is just right for little ones, and the illustrations are colorful and fun. More importantly, this lesson book is the cornerstone that branches out into...

multiple related theory, activity/ear training, notespeller, and technique books. Not only does this provide depth of understanding, but these additional books keep learning fresh. My daughter loves to find her extra “book of the day for related song activities…many in which she gets to color and draw (something *incredibly* important to her and, frankly, related to her overall willingness to focus on the music lesson). For the teacher's benefit, each page in the auxiliary books clearly refers back to the relevant page in the lesson book. Plus, there is also a Teacher’s guide (downloadable for free on the Alfred Publishing site, but you can get a hard copy if preferred). All in all, highly recommended.

Easy and fun piano lesson book. Sing along songs are funny and enjoyable for kids to remember what they are learning. Happy about the affordable price so that great to buy theory and other series of books as well.

I have been using Alfred products for over 30 years. Very satisfied with presentation of lesson book, theory book and notespeller book. Appreciate being able to purchase from my home since I am approx. 1 hour from the closest music store selling piano music products.

  • June 18, 2007 Perfect Introductory Course for Children

I bought books A-F for my daughter, who is 8 yrs old. These were perfect for her and she can mostly do these lessons on her own. She is really enjoying them. What I like is that there are instruction guidelines for teachers and parents that the kids follow...

along with. It tells you exactly which theory book and flash cards to end the lesson and work with as well. These books are fun!

  • September 28, 2006 Most excellent start!

I just started using this book to teach my 5-6 year old beginning piano students. They really get into the book's illustrations, and I like that it starts out with "just rhythm" so you can incorporate your own rhythm method along with learning the first few pages. They...

won't get into seeing a staff for another month or two, but they are well on the way to being ready for it!
