Aki Vocalise for Soprano and Piano, Opus 4, was given its name by my wife, Yumi. It means 'autumn' in Japanese. She heard in the piece feelings of loneliness, and also nostalgia for autumn in Japan, an appropriate description of what I wanted to express in the work. The fragile vocalise, a wordless melody, has two main themes: a simple, plaintive melody depicting solitude which begins and ends the piece, and a second melody which is more ominous in nature, combining Chopin’s Funeral March (from his Piano Sonata No.2) with sounds of taunting and teasing, as children are prone to do. I composed the darker middle section after learning of a senseless school shooting. .

Love this piece and have performed twice in public. Audience really enjoyed it -- some in tears. Beautiful simple melody in piano in the beginning. Soprano comes in with same melody -- wordless. Requires some pretty high notes by soprano. Middle section is more modern sounding -- supposed to be sung 'out of...

tune' but just a little bit. Eerie but fitting for the piece. Ending is my favorite. Simple descending scale with beginning accompaniment. Would be cool to perform singing part off stage -- sounds like a ghost. Definitely recommended for concert of modern music that doesn't sound too dissonant.
