This book teaches the same concepts as the child's Schaum course, but at a quicker pace.

While my friend had some basic understanding of reading music, I had little or no teaching experience. I've played piano more than 50 years and really never took the time to teach anyone and can't even remember how I learned to read music. To me, it's just...

something I've always done, similar to speaking bi-lingually in Spanish and English-I just did it. This system has proven to be excellent and has allowed me to share my knowledge of music with someone, in her early 40s who is very determined to learn to play the piano. The progressions are explained simply and with practice and guidance, my pupil is learning quickly. She's excited and her husband and children are very proud of her as am I.

    Difficulty Level:
  • April 25, 2008 Look for Something Else

This is a very old piano course frought with problems. Finger numbers are used excessively. The pace of the course is too rapid for some students. The old fashioned Middle C one-note-at-a-time approach is used for reading. There is no real development of musicianship skills and...

theory. Wesley Schaum, John W's son, has written a much better course for teachers who prefer a traditional approach: Piano for Adults. I would refer "old school" teachers to that instead. "New school" teachers might want to consider the David Carr Glover "Adult Piano Student" series instead.
