A Native American Prayer

By Nolan E. Schmit

SATB choir
Composed by Nolan E. Schmit. Octavo. Heritage Music Press #15/1695H. Published by Heritage Music Press (LO.15-1695H).

Item Number: LO.15-1695H

This stunning original is based on a beautiful and powerful Native American text that calls upon the Great Spirit to grant strength and wisdom to each of us as we journey through our lives. The prayer requests that we live our lives humbly, always seeking the divine, with utmost appreciation and respect for the world around us. This setting uses traditional western harmonies to enrich the lyrical melody, which is reminiscent of Native American music and plainsong. A splendid addition to multicultural repertoire and creative programming needs.

I am a secondary vocal music instructor. This work is really lovely. It works well with secondary or college ensembles and I recently heard it performed by an adult community choir. It would also be good for church use. It is well-voiced, musically constructed, challenging, and throughtful. The accompaniment...

enhances and reflects the text and students really enjoy the piece. The text is outstanding and Schmit has done a masterful job of setting it without making the piece sound like it came out of a 1960's western. I can foresee this piece appearing on All-State lists and I look forward to hearing more pieces by this composer.
