    Southern California
    Difficulty Level:
  • June 20, 2007 Sumptuous Operetta

This sophisticated adult musical boasts Stephen Sondheim's most ravishing score, set almost entirely in 3/4 time (or multiples), with oblique musical ties to Ravel's "Valses Nobles et sentimentales" (only directly quoted once, in the opening celeste chord of "Liaisons"). The music is complex and demands strong legitimate...

voices as well as excellent singing actors. But it is well worth the effort, as it is a truly magical show.

    Difficulty Level:
  • August 04, 2006 Yet another Sondheim goldmine!!

This should not be a surprising sentiment, but Sondheim has done it again. In this elegant musical, written all in denominations of 3 (3/4, 6/8, and so on), with the waltz as its central theme, the long sought after goal of perfect romantic comedy is very nearly attained...

. With Sondheim's witty and sophisticated lyrics interweaved with his flowing, melodies, lovable patter songs, and rousing opera-like choruses of ten or more characters, there's no going wrong - and, once you start listening to these wonderful songs, no going back.
