Villa-Lobos

A sparkling music and a melancholy musica at the same time, in Brazilian spirit. Wonderful!

Indispensable Villa-Lobos

Heitor Villa-Lobos is one of the most original composers of the 20th century, and the library of a classical pianist is simply incomplete without a solid selection of his music which, until recently, was hard to find. The one Dover anthology was useful but suffered from multiple typefaces and some difficult to read pieces. This Amsco edition, attributed to the composer himself, contains pieces ranging from children's level to extremely difficult. It includes the familiar Bachianas Brasileiras No. 4, Suite Floral, the instantly recognizable O Polichinello, selections from Prole de Bebe, and nearly 40 others. The typeface is uniform and crisp. However, it would be even better if a competent editor could provide fingerings (there are none) and suggest alternative notations for the numerous passages that are spread over multiple staves.

Great collection

This is a great collection of Villa Lobos including some of the bigger pieces such as Festa no sertao. Christina Ortiz is perhaps the very best recording artist of most of these pieces in case you want to hear them. This is a very good price for so much music.

Best of Brazilian music

This is one book that all piano professors should have in their library. The literature varies from intermediate to advance with the advantage of being all in one volume. For those pianists who want to play different literature this is the best buy together with another edition of other piano music by Villa-Lobos from another publisher.
