you'll never be done with this book!!!
gary's approach to the drums combines exercises which are both musically and technically challenging. from the first exercise, you'll realize how much room there is for improvement. just get the book and try singing the click track while playing the first system! you'll see! if practiced carefully with a click while singing all of the parts, the improvement in your playing will be tremendous. i, for one, have experienced this process first hand while studying with Gary in the 80's. it is a sure way to ramp up your focus and independence while playing musically. prepare to spend countless hours perfecting your craft. kenny aronoff, danny gottlieb, and dave weckl did. they were among gary's finest students. need i say more?

Get it NOW!!!!
This is the best drum kit book I have ever come across. It challenges your mind and allows you to develop amazing coordination skills. The excercises can be adapted in so many different ways you'll find you will use this book again and again and again and still find something new to do with it!

Old Way vs. New Way
At first glance New Breed seemed a bit like Syncopation, as far as the classic approach of applying a constant Jazz ride pattern to pages 30-45. For example, Mr. Chester's book has you play 39 ostinatos called "systems," with right or left hand lead, while you read with your remaining limb a series of pages called "melodies." Comparitively, Syncopation only has one system (the ride pattern). So once I started slowly making my way through the New Breed systems I began to realize how original this book is. It challenges you more so because it has you doing a lot more things at once, which will take you to another level. This book explains to you in detail approximately four tasks you're to play simultaneously for each exercise; which includes playing the system and melody with a click while singing one of the parts. I've found this to pay off when I noticed myself playing more ambidextrously and creatively at one of my gigs! Highly recommended, if you have the guts!
