Well-written lesser known Rutter
This piece is not as well known as some of John Rutter's more popular selections (such as "A Gaelic Blessing") but is an excellent example of his style - very melodic, some mild 20th century elements, very grateful writing for the voice with careful voice leading. There are some breif moments of drama with an exciting middle section (with 5/8, etc.) but the overall mood is generally calming and lyrical. The featured solo part for clarinet is excellent and adds a haunting tone color. It requires an advanced player. The opening clarinet theme may remind you of the theme from "The Young and Restless". The text can be a bit "wordy", but the melodies are very lovely. The vocal writing is not as difficult as it may at first seem as there a many sections in unison or two part writing. A very good choice for your choir.
