Complete, Yet Lacking
I want to like this edition, but I am spoiled by the Alfred Masterworks style of two-tone notation. This book uses a "bar" character to indicate editorial additions to the text. Unfortunately, the bar creates additional difficulty in interpreting the performance marks. For example, this is the only place where I've seen a barred slur (played exactly like a regular slur), and fingering for negative 2! All the performance notes are in the back of the book, linked by measure number. A serious student would need to transcribe these notes forward to actually learn them. I rated this edition intermediate/advanced because you would already need to understand baroque ornamentation before attempting to play these pieces. The notes in back provide some help, but do not cover all instances where ornamentation appears. This edition contains the complete Anna Magdalena Notebook, but lacks some of the features that would make it a good resource for learning to play these delightful pieces.
