Teaching Little Fingers To Play
I disagree with another reviewer who says this book isn't used by teachers who have taken a Piano Pedagogy course. As a Juilliard graduate, this book is not only recommended but lauded as a solid course for beginners who are serious about piano study. Many of the other courses are dumbed down and don't start the student on the staff. For someone worried about finger numbers it surprises me they would recommend courses that start ONLY with finger numbers!Yes, this book and the next books in the series expect a lot from the student. They also expect a lot from the teacher. Any trained teacher will supplement every course they use and not expect the course alone to teach everything. Many of the other courses are for lazy teachers who really don't know how to teach. If you don't know how to explain what you are teaching, don't use this course. If you know what you're doing, this is one of the best. I can also recommend Schaum, which starts on the staff.

Teaching little fingers
This piano program is working very well. My grandson is 8 yrs old and picked up several of the pieces right away. He had not played piano music before but has taken some guitar lessons at school. Some of the notes were familiar to him. I would recommend it for anyone who knows how to read and it old enough to sit and listen to the teacher before they try to play the piece.

Must Have
My mother learned to play from this book. I learned to play from her book even though the cover had long been gone. I was so thrilled to find it again so now my son is learning to play piano from this book. Definitely a must have for anyone wanting to learn to play when young.

Teaching little fingers to play
Same book our teacher used to learn 40 years ago- still works well with little and rather larger, late learner fingers!

Sweet memories
I first used this book in 1958 when I started music lessons. A few years later I gave it to my cousin when he took lessons. I loved this little book and still remember my music teacher singing the words to the songs as I played them. What a treat to be able to have it again after all of these years. Very good learning book for beginners in piano. Fifty-three years ago my teacher said the John Thompson series was the best books to teach from and they still are.

Wouldn't use anything else
Thompson is the best. I've tried other methods with older students who have trouble reading, but seem to play well by ear, but nothing really works like Thompson with a younger child. Start them early enough in Thompson, teach them to practice and they will learn to read well. I supplement with Thompson's Note Speller, Scale Speller and Chord Speller but I still supplement with my own style of theory for my students to have a complete theory background. That is my only complaint with any Thompson series or product. I won't use anything but Thompson anymore.
