Symphony No. 1 - Finale by Vasily Kalinnikov. Arranged by Glenn Cliffe Bainum. For Concert Band. Score and full set of parts.. Symphonic/Concert Band Series. Grade 4-6. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.21619010).
The skillful transcriptions of the late Glenn Cliffe Bainum have proven to be the standard by which others are measured. His contribution to the great literature for band is immense, and this transcription is one of Mr. Bainum's most monumental works. Basile Kalinnilov, a contemporary of Tchaikovsky died prematurely at 35, just as he was establishing himself as one of the great Russsian composers. AWESOME!
I played this in an all county band concert and during the loud parts of the song, we had an antiphonal brass section that was lined up all the way to the back of the auditorium in the audience. It was incredible.

A great piece to play.
I am currently playing this piece in my university concert band and I absolutely love it. There are so many different parts to the piece and it is definitely one of my favorite pieces to have ever performed.

A good, though shortened, transcription
Though Bainum captures the spirit of Kalinnikov's work, he shortens the piece by several minutes, and fails to bring out the minor details of the symphonic work that make it the masterpiece that it is. Aside from that, the transcription is a good choice for advanced high school and collegiate...
