Sunflowers and Wheat Fields by Catherine Rollin. For Piano. Piano Solo; Solo. Intermediate level piece for the Piano Solo event with the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) Festivals Bulletin 2008-2009-2010. SMP Level 7 (Late Intermediate); NFMC Level: Moderately Difficult Class 3. Sheet. 4 pages. Published by Alfred Music Publishing (AP.22480).

This solo, commissioned by the Topeka and Northeast Kansas Music Teachers Association, is aptly named. The A section begins with a delicate melody in G major, creating the image of a brightly shining field of sunflowers. The B section depicts the wind gently blowing through the wheat fields. The left hand in this section is expansive and covers a wide range. The melody is an excellent study of harmonic intervals, especially thirds. The ! time signature adds to the lilting quality of the piece. The complete picture of the music paints a beautiful and lyrical tribute to the state of Kansas. Intermediate.
