Good bedtime music

While these transcriptions are simplified, the overall mood of the music is the same as the recording. Keeping it simple makes it easier to play when sleepy, and I like to play this to help me relax before bed.

Great music for beginners to intermediates

I decided to try this book because of the beautiful instrumentals and piano music throughout Enya's recordings. I've been playing the piano for about 30 years and play pretty good for church and such but got out of the habit of practicing other music. This book (I ordered 2 other books (paint the sky with stars and Watermark) in hopes of getting back in the habit of playing music outside of my comfort zone. All three books are easing me back into playing non-Christian music. I recommend these to anyone who enjoys the music as recorded as the sheet music is true to the recorded. Hope this helps you.

I've seen better

The songs are beautiful, however the transcriptions are less than accurate and, in some cases, a bit simplified. At least 2 of the songs (Books of Days and Lothlorien) are not in the correct key, which is rather disappointing. I also found this to be the case with The Memory of Trees. Everything is in the right key in this book, however the transcription does leave something to be desired. Still great songs though. That being said, I did enjoy the forward in Shepherd Moons, which explains how the songs were inspired. And again, regardless of the errors, the music is beautiful.

A note for beginners..

To beginners. If you want a beautiful song that you can play. Go for "No Holly For Miss Quin" I have it memorized front and back. It is simple, yet beautiful. The rest of the book, as well as the Cd are enchanting. You will find upbeat music, slow and gentle tunes, and every genre you can think of, this book has it all!

Beautiful music!

I recently bought a piano after 28 years. (I haven't played since I was 12 years old.) I was an intermediate/advanced player back then, and thought this music would be a great re-introduction to piano. It is fantastic! Easy to learn; not to difficult, not too easy. Sounds like the CD, especially my favorite "No Holly for Miss Quinn" is beatiful to play! I can't wait to learn the rest of the songs too!

How can you keep from playing?

The music was easier to play than I expected, especially for a self-taught pianist. Playing it on piano only does mean it sounds somewhat different from the album, but the feeling is still true to the original. All the lyrics are included (except the alternate English lyrics for Book of Days) in their original languages (English, Latin, Gaelic). The book also contains an interesting introductory section, which contains lyricist Roma Ryan's comments on the inspiration for each song. (Bet you didn't know "Marble Halls" came from an opera!) This book is one of my favorites.
