Inspired by the poem "L'apres-midi d'un faune" by French poet S. Mallarme, this orchestral work was the basis for the ballet Afternoon of a Faun, choreographed by Njinsky. It is one of Debussy's most famous and well-loved works. This reorchestration finds a new clarity in the smaller orchestral size. Beyond the fact that it allows 16 musicians to all be soloists in their own right, the orchestration is intended to rediscover the original work. While the musical text is retained, the orchestral colour is totally recreated.
